About BruteFish

|
Forming in 2001, BruteFish began making posters for the Houston landmark venue Fitzgerald's. Using a combination of pen and ink, alcohol, lack of sleep, and a rundown computer, Ben Perez and Steve Sims joined forces to create artwork geared towards attracting a crowd of heavy drinkers and hard rocking customers to the doors of Fitzgerald's. BruteFish, drawing upon a rich Houston history of gigposter artists such as Uncle Charlie and Jermaine Rogers, utilizes bright color and strong graphics to draw the eye of any strolling passers-by.
With a strong work ethic brought on by fear of being poor, BruteFish created nearly 50 posters in the first year of their existence. BruteFish has worked in nearly every genre of music with bands ranging from the Dead Kennedys, Johnny Winter, KRS-ONE, and the Wailers. Even while working with nationally and internationally known bands BruteFish never forgets the local bands who need and deserve the same level of promotion brought about with the use of slick, professionally done gigposters. By working with many different local venues such as Emos', Mary Jane's/Fat Cat, Cardi's, the Axiom, BruteFish has created a body of work that allows their work to be shown in venues and galleries in places as far away as Canada, Scotland, Australia, and even Russia. Focusing on the promotional side of music has not stopped BruteFish from creating artwork for fun. With CD covers and t-shirt designs BruteFish has entered into the realm of merchandising with the same work ethic that allowed them to create so many posters that gained them notoriety in the beginning. |
